With the Masters, baseball starting, and the NHL regular season coming to an end this weekend, there are only a handful of NBA games that are worth actually paying attention to. The action begins on Saturday where the defending NBA champions will look to build some momentum against a pay head contender they very well still could play in the opening round of the playoffs, and then continues on Broadway where the New York Knicks host the top team from the Eastern conference without two of their top stars, before another matchup of playoff teams fighting for position later on in the evening.

The defending champion Mavericks decided to allow free agents Tyson Chandler and JJ Barea to walk in an effort to make sure they had enough salary cap room to go out and sign some big names this coming offseason, and while the move may very well pay off in the long run, it has left the current Dallas team with a lack of depth that at times has been exposed. Surrendering their first home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in five seasons was rough, but losing by 19 points made it that much worse, as the Mavericks were completely dominated in all aspects of their 94-75 loss earlier in the week. It won’t get any easier against a Memphis team that has won 19 of its 27 games on home court, and will be a good per head test of just how resilient this Dallas team is as another contender gets up to host the reigning champions.

If there is one team that is not going to buy the idea of the Knicks being without Jeremy Lin and Amare Stoudamire for the rest of the season as a sufficient excuse for not making the postseason, it sure won’t be the Bulls. Chicago has managed to build the best record in the NBA even with reigning MVP Derrick Rose spending a lot of time on the sidelines dealing with various injuries, as team defense, rebounding, and depth scoring have all played a prominent role in their success. New York has actually been very good of late, with wins in eight of 10 games heading in to Tuesday night’s action, but the Bulls are one of the best road teams in the NBA, and if Rose does play it will be hard for the Knicks to keep this contest close as pay per head sportsbook underdogs.

The Celtics are another price per head sports team familiar with playing solid team defense and getting contributions from their multiple scorers on the offensive end, and after taking out the Miami Heat in a 91-72 blowout last Sunday, it will be interesting to see what they do as an encore at home against the Sixers. Philadelphia has played good basketball this season but is better in its own building than on the road, and Boston can still catch the Orlando Magic for third in the conference.
